Federal laboratory competition focuses on college technology businesses
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is taking applications for its 2009
Global Venture Challenge, which offers cash prizes for innovative
business ideas from young entrepreneurs.
The 2009 challenge focuses on energy. A team of judges will evaluate
submissions from teams of graduate students that represent innovative
product ideas that address current market needs and could become
viable businesses. The top team will take home $25,000. In addition,
this year's event will include a high school competition, with scholarships
of up to $4,000 as prizes.
Finalists will gather at ORNL March 25-27 to tour the facility,
network with one another, and meet venture capitalists and others
who could support their businesses. The accompanying Energy Venture
Showcase will highlight start-up companies in bioenergy, energy
efficiency and renewable energies.
The initial one-page team application is due Feb. 2, 2009. For
details, visit www.globalventurechallenge.org/.

Coming
soon: New industry impact data
NBIA will be partnering with the University
of Michigan, the University at Albany-SUNY and Cybergroup
over the coming year to collect updated information
about the economic impact of business incubation and
business incubation best practices. In June, the U.S.
Economic Development Administration awarded the group
$250,000 for a yearlong project to create tools to help
incubator managers measure their program’s performance
and evaluate their compliance with industry best practices.
This effort marks our first examination of industry
outcomes since the 1997 release of Business Incubation
Works and our first attempt to demonstrate concretely
whether adherence to best practices leads to better
results. Watch for more details about the project in
the October issue of NBIA Review. If you haven’t
been collecting economic impact data on your program,
it’s not too late to start: Visit www.nbia.org/impact/

Economic Impact: A Toolkit today!
